Our first snowman of the year (even when we don't have any snow!)

Snowman

Due to the fact we are in Cornwall, we hardly (and to be fair with a hint of jealousy) ever have snow. However, one of Emily's customers sent in this picture a special greeting to us all!

Many thanks to Teresa Dobson at Eastfield House Day Care Services.

On the 13th and 14th November 2012, Gloveman Supplies Ltd (GSL) attended the annual Care Show in Birmingham. Drawing in thousands of care professionals from across the country, the show proved to be a huge success for GSL. The stand drew in hundreds including the marketing manager for a large pharmaceutical and retail company who declared “It was the best stand he had ever seen in this type of show”.  The stand gave teasing information about the website, GSL’s new online customer “VIP Ordering System” and also promoted the trustworthiness and credibility of using GSL.

Customers also commented very positively about the high quality and consistency of our products and a great deal of interest in the unique ethical advantages of GSL, FSC, Eco Latex, small carbon footprint and our commitment to our plantation communities in health and education."

David continued by saying "At the show, GSL offered a price beater promise 'We will beat any competitors price on like for like core products'. We met a large number of new prospects from a wide spectrum of business from care homes and councils to teaching hospitals and manufacturers.”

"A lot of interest was expressed in the new bamboo uniforms (which Kayleigh herself wore) both in the style and comfort. Also customers were interested in the ethical advantages offered by this unique product. All in all, the Care Show proved to be extremely important and advantageous to GSL and will help towards our continued growth and our future commitment to customer service."

Gloveman powers up it disposable position by purchasing Nicholson’s South-West Ltd

Following the retirement of Geoff Nicholson, founder and director of Nicholson’s South-West Ltd, Gloveman Supplies Ltd (GSL) saw it as an ideal opportunity to strengthen its position in the hygiene and disposable market. Mike Peck, Managing Director of GSL said “By purchasing such a well-founded and established business like Nicholson’s South-West, it has given us a huge advantage in the disposable and hygiene market. This takeover will enable us to further strengthen our South-West market share, and eventually will enable GSL and Nicholson’s to offer a greater product range across all customers.”

He added “Nicholson’s now operates out of Redruth rather than Oakhampton, but the local delivery service and support remains the same. Geoff Nicholson was extremely pleased that we haven’t consumed the business entirely within GSL, and we are operating both companies as separate entities entirely.”

Matthew Cox, former Office Manager at GSL, has been promoted to Operations Manager for Nicholson’s and he will bring with him all his experience of the disposable and hygiene arena to the helm. “It’s a very exciting opportunity”, Matt said. “I aim to uphold the good name Nicholson’s South-West has created over the past 24 years by changing very little initially; and with the support of former Nicholson’s employee Paul Beaumont, I am determined to help Nicholson’s grow even further within the South-West – and beyond.”

Geoff was given a modest and enjoyable “send-off” at the White Heart Hotel in Oakhampton, and plans to spend his time relaxing with his wife Hilary.

Gloveman receives a special thanks for donating supplies

Volunteer Rita Painter, on behalf of the charity www.missiondirect.org asked David Dinneen at GSL to donate some medical gloves to SDA Hospital in Waterloo, Sierra Leone. Only too pleased to help, David sent the gloves directly to Rita who then took them to the hospital with other items of aid from various sources. On her return, she sent us the below email.

"Hi David.

We are now back from a fantastic trip to Sierra Leone where we managed to repaint the hospital waiting room, Palava hut and corridors and replace a school floor and fully decorate it.  The gloves were very gratefully received at the SDA hospital in Waterloo, Freetown as they get through loads and find getting supplies difficult with cost and delivery - as you can imagine things are very tough over there.

The Dr would like me to pass on his thanks to you and your company and I have attached a photo of him receiving the various aid we took over.  David many thanks for helping to make the lives easier for people in Sierra Leone
.

Gloveman’s laundry bag is just the answer for infection control with linen

In April 2011 the International Scientific Forum on Home Hygiene (IFH) has issued a paper on entitled “The infection risks associated with clothing and household linens in home and everyday life settings, and the role of laundry”.

The introduction states primarily that the evidence presented in the 2009 IFH review on the global burden of hygiene-related diseases shows that infection outbreaks in the home and everyday life settings, particularly gastrointestinal (GI) infections, respiratory infections (RT), and skin, wound and eye infections, continue to exact a heavy toll on the health and prosperity of the global community.

Reading through the paper it’s easy to understand why hygiene is the first starting point to reduce the spread of infection such as MRSA and the community-acquired Panton Valentine Leukocidin. The breakdown of how infection spreads starts with hands. From there on in, it is contact form hands to surface, food contact surface, cleaning cloths and utensils, clothing and household linens, toilets and bathroom facilities, and finally floors, walls, furniture, etc.

Luckily enough, Gloveman Supplies Ltd offers a sealable laundry sack. The whole sack can be placed in to an industrial washing machine without taking the clothes or linen out. The laundry sack then dissolves and the laundry gets washed thoroughly as normal. The sack ends up a small ball of plastic that can be disposed of easily. This method reduces the risk of cross contamination.

Laundry of clothing and linen within the home, care home or nursing environment has the potential to act as vehicles with the spread of infection. From donning clothes that have failed to be cleaned correctly, or where highly contaminated linen or towelling that has been washed with other laundry with disease being passed between items, to sharing bedding (pillows, sheets) and even sitting on contaminated on a bed can cause the spread of micro-organisms.

Here’s a ‘literal’ example of how infection from bedding can spread, not just in a single environment, but into the outside world: An elderly relative has been admitted to hospital, and loving relatives visit to show their concern and support. On numerous occasions, these relatives, and their off-spring, will sit on the patient’s bed. Now imagine if that patient has contracted MRSA. This has spread onto the linen and been picked up by the clothing and hands of their relatives. On their return home, the visiting relatives will then pass on the MRSA contamination to furniture, further bedding, and laundry.

This may seem slightly far-fetched, but as the paper explains in detail this is exactly why the cleaning of clothing, towelling and laundry effectively is so critical in infection control. The paper fully addresses procedures and identifies fungal, bacterial and viral strains, how contamination occurs and its potential for spreading. More importantly, once highlighting the risks and their origins, it deals with the fundamental issues of the correct procedures to tackle the problems raised.

This paper is essential reading matter for all care and nursing home managers, healthcare facilities and healthcare associations.

Gloveman Supplies Ltd sponsor The REACT Initiative

Supporting the REACT Initiative was a step which Glovemand Supplies Ltd felt it needed to take. The reasons for which are explained below in the brief description of how the initiative works.

About the REACT initiative

The problem:
Sadly, drug and alcohol abuse, antisocial behaviour, violence and crime seem to be an ever present menace in our communities, and the problems only seems to be getting worse.  Highlighting issues such as these is of paramount importance to the React initiative, and through education and awareness, we aim to help reduce this worrying trend.  After all, the children of today could be the criminals of tomorrow.

Official Home Office statistics show that the UK illicit drug market is estimated to be worth between £4 billion and £6.6 billion, and Class A drug use generates an estimated £15.4 billion in crime and health costs each year, of which 99% is accounted for by problem drug users.  Between a third and a half of theft and burglary is estimated to be drug related. Worrying figures indeed, and a problem that is most effectively solved through education at a grass-roots level.

How react helps:
The react initiative is primarily an educational tool.  It helps raise awareness of these and other issues relating to public safety in the form of a printed journal that is distributed nationally to educational establishments, public awareness groups and support groups for the emergency services.  It is also sent directly to individual police forces, ambulance and fire services, for onward distribution. Although React is a national initiative, the publication is regionalised specifically for each area of the nation, to ensure that the sponsors receive the maximum benefit for their support.
